Trip Report - Lake Indoon - Sandy Cape

1-3 April 2022

The start of our trip was delayed by a week as to avoid the forecast severe weather that had been forecast.
With one vehicle having travelled earlier in the day to Lake Indoon 3 vehicles met in Kelmscott on the Friday evening.
With ominous clouds on the horizon we set off into the dusk hoping that we wouldn’t get wet. We had a quick stop at Cataby to stretch our legs and make use of the facilities before continuing to Lake Indoon.

Inevitably we did encounter some rain on the way. We arrived at Lake Indoon to find the lovely Kay waving her torch around to guise us to where they were camped. Camp was quickly set up and we spent the rest of the evening having a chat and avoiding the ants that seemed to be everywhere.
Saturday morning came and a few of us had a little walk around some of the lake. It was the first time I had seen water in it for a couple of years. Then the rain decided to visit just before we packed up camp. Grrr.

Off we went to visit the cave at Stockyard Gully. It was the first time a couple of the members had visited the cave and they were very impressed. After morning tea we slowly made our way along various tracks towards Leeman for lunch. Some were a bit tight and scratchy, especially for the larger vehicles.

After lunch we headed to Sandy Cape to set up camp. Luckily there was some spare campsites. One was big enough that we were able to fit 4 vehicles and a camper trailer on to one site. We had a great night sitting around our first campfire for the year.
Sunday morning came, and so did the rain. Just before we went to pack up. From Sandy Cape we headed to Hill River. Chris and Kay left the convoy as we passed through Jurien Bay.

With three vehicles we headed to the mouth of the Hill River. It was not as high as I expected, and the sandbar was closed so you could drive to the other side of the river. From the river we headed south towards Cervantes. Sam left us before we hit the tracks as he has secret knowledge of how narrow and scratchy the tracks were.

Glen and I bravely continued. We first tried the beach but soon ran out of beach to drive on, so we backtracked and picked up the tracks heading south. The tracks were tight and twisty. Occasionally we managed to get back onto the beach only to be forced back onto the tracks.

Once in Cervantes we aired up out tyres, found a shop for some hot chips and headed for home.
Thanks to everyone for coming along.
